Destiny just released on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One and already Bungie is starting to rest on its laurels. Still, they have good reason to do so as this game has been one of the most anticipated games of the year. Bungie, former Halo developer, had broken off from Microsoft in 2007 and had been quiet for the better part of 5 years. When they announced their newest project, people were in anticipation and the zenith of this anticipation culminated in the launch of the game on September 9.
Bungie has already announced that they have shipped over $500 million to first party retailers. They’ve stated that this is the biggest new franchise launch in history and, let’s be honest, they’ve done a bang up job.
Taken from Polygon:
“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”
Still, shipping doesn’t exactly equate to actual sales numbers, only the fact that they’ve made so many games and have shipped them, not sold them. But with the buzz going around for this game and a very successful beta test run, it seems a sure fire hit when the dollar numbers come in.
