Variety reports that 20th Century Fox is in final negotiations with DISTRICT 9 director Neil Blomkamp to helm a new film. The studio has confirmed that this new film will be a direct sequel to the original Alien franchise and will be released sometime after PROMETHEUS 2, which is slated for a March 4th, 2016 release date. Blomkamp took to his personal Instagram account to post a sketch of a Xenomorph with the headline “So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien.”
The last Alien film to be released was director Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS, which was supposedly a spin-off taking place in the same universe as the other Alien films which focused on the origin of the giant engineer seen briefly in the first Alien film released in 1979. The film received mixed reviews, but managed to gross nearly $400 million worldwide. 20th Century Fox seems confident enough to hand over the Alien franchise to Neil Blomkamp, as he is known for his sci-fi films DISTRICT 9, ELYSIUM, and now CHAPPIE, set to be released on March 6th.
