The first iteration of Disney Infinity surprised me. It was a solid meshing of live action characters mixed with 2d and 3d animated characters packaged in a game that allowed for incredible crossover possibilities. In addition, the game had character specific worlds that just had a lot of gameplay. It was just…fun.
Disney Infinity 2.0 just took the franchise to the next level. Adding a whole slew of disney-branded characters, the entertainment giant added in a huge chunk of the Marvel Universe by cashing in on the most lucrative franchises they could muster up: Avengers, Spider-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy. If I wasn’t hooked already, this would have done it. Gameplay changes and new toy box functionality along with skill trees and new worlds made this the quintessential package to buy.
But Disney just announced a new Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars today on their website.
If Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters Inc, Toy Story, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man weren’t enough to convince you, the new Infinity 3.0 Star Wars will.
To be honest, I’m going nuts over here.
It’s no secret that Disney owns the Star Wars franchise and it’s also no secret that Disney is pouring everything they can into reviving the magic Star Wars once had in the 80’s. With the solid reputation of Disney Infinity and the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie releasing this Christmas, it’s prime time that the Infinity franchise take on the legendary story.
And it looks like they’re going big. The Star Wars arm of the game will have 3 play sets! The first, Twilight of the Republic, will focus on the first 3 episodes of the franchise. It will have characters like Darth Maul. Ahsoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The second set, Rise Against the Empire will have the classic episodes 4-6 and will feature iconic characters Han Solo, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Leia Organa.
The third Star Wars set will coincide with the opening of The Force Awakens and will feature all the new characters from the upcoming movie!
Of course, Disney isn’t going to let their other franchises fall by the wayside. There’s plans to have a play set based around the new movie Inside Out and all playable emotion characters Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust will be available. The Frozen title will receive Olaf. Sam Flynn and Quorra from the Tron franchise will make their appearance, and the Marvel franchise will introduce Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armor and Ultron,
Not to mention new toy box functionality will have compatibility with Infinity 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0. The price point, which has dodged a lot of sales, has been brought down to $64.99 for a starter set, and Power Disks will no longer be sold in blind packs, they will be labeled.
I’m going to spend a lot of money this Christmas…
Disney Infinity 3.0 will be released for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Wii-U, PC, and Steam. You can pre-order here.
