Will somebody please stop with the onion chopping, because after looking at this cast photo and accepting what it truly means, we are all going to need a minute!
Closing out on what many fans can no doubt agreeably describe as the end of an era, or rather the end of the cinematic journey for the Skywalker family, is the wrap on production of the final, and what is sure to be one of the most epic chapters in the saga, Star Wars Episode IX. Although the resurgence of Star Wars movie releases over the last four years has triggered immeasurable excitement and anticipation, it has at the same time spurned a fair bit of divisiveness and incurred a heavy amount of criticism for certain choices that were made on behalf of some of the most beloved characters and storylines. But regardless of which side of the imperial credit you are on, there is no denying that today marks a truly bittersweet ending to a segment of the riveting stories, that for many of us began as an adventure tale about a simple farm boy who lived on a planet in a galaxy far, far away. That is not to say that Episode IX marks the last of the interstellar theatrics we will hear from rebel scum, miss-firing stormtroopers, lightsaber ignitions, or droids who deliver top-secret holographic messages. As we speak, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson is currently at work on another big screen expansion of the neverending SWU. However, goodbyes are never easy, and the conclusion of these latest chapters will assuredly include some of the toughest farewells imaginable.
Many familiar faces are returning for the final run of the current saga which includes Daisy Ridley, Adam, Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domnall Gleason, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Newcomers to the cast for Episode IX are Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, Matt Smith, and Kerri Russell. Veteran actors of the original series who will also be reprising their roles are Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Mr. “Hello, what have we here” himself, Billy Dee Williams who will swing his cape once more as Lando Calrissian.
And in what will be her posthumous farewell performance, Carrie Fisher will once again appear as Leia Organa, by way of previously unseen footage taken from Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
Returning to direct Episode IX is Force Awakens Director, J.J. Abrams, who is also a producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy, and Michele Rejwan. Callum Green and Jason McGatlin are the executive producers.
The untitled Star Wars Episode IX arrives in theaters December 2019.
In closing, may I point out that in all fairness this would all feel a lot less sad if, at the same time, we were also comforted by receiving an actual opening date for Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge coming this year to both the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World? Just sayin!
