DISNEY and SONY are at odds right now, and while that could stop our friendly neighborhood Spider-man from swinging with the Avengers, don’t panic just yet. The good news is, that a new agreement can still be reached.  But the bad news is, that for now,  the deal that allows Sony-controlled Spider-man to appear in Disney’s MCU, has not been renewed.  And surprise, it’s all about money.  Disney wants more of it.

Disney believes that Spiderman’s inclusion in their lucrative Marvel Universe, helped ‘Spider-man: Far From Home’ reach the Billion Dollar club.  And that might be true.  But the 50/50 split that Disney proposed as part of the new film deal,  was soundly rejected by Sony, given that they already gave Disney control over the Spider-man image and merchandising.   And so Sony feels that Disney is asking too high a price.  Are they?

I don’t know.  But what I do know is that The Walt Disney Company is building a new Spider-man ride at Disney’s California Adventure right now.  It is part of a new Marvel-Land project. So I’m sure Disney is not done negotiating with Sony just yet. Because cutting ties with Spider-man now would literally leave them hanging. Pun intended.   And it may take a while, but sooner or later, I think we’ll hear that Spidey is back in the MCU…

UPDATE: Sony released a statement…

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” Sony said. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”

“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own,” the statement reads. “Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
