Black Christmas 4K UHD Review: The Original Violent Night
Fortunately, the end of October hasn’t stopped more horror movies from coming out on 4K UHD. It’s never a bad time for horror, and there are plenty of Christmas horror movies anyway. Scream Factory has upgraded their Black Christmas Blu-ray to 4K UHD just in time for the holidays.
The ‘70s grain of the original Black Christmas almost makes it look like a snuff film. Is that too much? Maybe an underground grindhouse exploitation film which is sort of is. The Christmas lights glow green, red and blue, and the red Santa suit, green tree and blue tinsel also provide color.
The sorority house is full of deep shadows that create an evocative mood, in the attic especially. The camera keeps panning around the sisters with all that pitch black space between them. A shadowy figure stalking the sleeping sisters remains distinct in 4K. The search party goes out in the pitch black night to look for a missing body too.
The new 5.1 mix with restored sound effects makes good use of surround sound. You’ll hear the cat meowing in the rears and bodies pop out with truly startling jump scares. Doors shut, the phone rings and some conversations circle the speakers. Jailhouse clamor in the police station also makes the setting feel active and lived in.
Previous Blu-ray bonus features are also included in the new 4K UHD edition.
