Interview by Fred Topel
When I told Twitter that Starz was bringing Outlander back to the Television Critics Association, I took a lot of questions for the cast. Unfortunately, my time with Caitriona Balfe was the briefest, so I hope I chose the best questions to ask her. One of them got answered on the panel as well, so that’s three for you until Outlander returns this April on Starz.
Nerd Report: Some of the fans say Jamie is their book boyfriend. Is Jamie your book boyfriend?
Caitriona Balfe: [Laughs] I’ve heard people say that. No, I wouldn’t say Jamie’s my book boyfriend. I think he’s an amazing character and I think Diana’s created this incredible person but no, I don’t think I’ve ever had a book boyfriend. I get into the stories more than one single character.
Nerd Report: How on Earth do you manage your Twitter feed?
Caitriona Balfe: Oh, badly. Really badly. I’m such a sporadic — I’ll take a notion one day and I’ll try and be really good, but then I can go for a week or two without going on it at all. Sam is so good, I don’t know how he manages it, and Diana, I don’t know how she manages to write books and manage a Twitter feed and a Facebook, but I try. I really enjoy engaging with the fans when I can, but it’s not my strong point.
Panel Question: How has playing Claire changed you? I cannot imagine inhabiting this character without it having a profound impact on a person personally.
Caitriona Balfe: Well, I think just in terms of sort of getting through this amazing undertaking of putting in so much time into the show and sort of every day showing up and playing this really strong, very resilient character, I think it showed me sort of how much strength and resilience I have. And I think you don’t sort of go through something like that without sort of realizing well, wow, that’s a big achievement and you grow from that. So I think, if anything, Claire’s just either brought my inner strength out or sort of shown me that I’m maybe stronger than I thought I was previously.
