SUPERGIRL Recap: “The Brain Bomb”

Is it the season finale, or the series finale? Those CBS executives still haven’t told us. So we go into this, the latter half of a two-part episode, not knowing how to feel. The title of the episode is actually; ‘Better Angels’. And while it’s supposed to be an emotional ride, it’s more hackneyed than heartwarming. Remember where we left off last week: National City is under Myriad’s mind-control spell. And Alex is in a Myriad-trance fighting Supergirl. Alex is on her kryptonite battle suit, and can apparently do just about anything, so she opens up a Kryptonian can of ‘Whoop Ass’, and almost kills Supergirl. That is until her Mom arrives, via Martian Manhunter, and talks her down. Mom talks about their strength as a family, which Alex responds to, becoming her old self again. And this success validates Supergirl’s plan, which is to have the same kind of heart-to-heart with the entire city. So with Max and Cat’s help, she broadcasts her emotional message to the masses. And it works, even though Supergirl’s speech is more sap than actual sentiment. National City’s people snap out of their trances, and Myriad is destroyed. YEAH!!!!! It’s all over, or is it?

This is where Non and Indigo become moustache-twirling villainous clichés. They decide to leave Earth, to find another planet to subjugate, but not before killing everyone here first. I guess bitter is better. They amplify Myriad, so that in four hours everyone’s head will literally explode. (Holy ‘Scanners’ Batman!) That is messed up. But Supergirl is determined to save the world, even if it means sacrificing her own life. I guess this new brain bomb affects her too. But luckily this impending threat to the world can wait, because Kara has to go back to work and bring Cat her latte first, while saying goodbye to her friends.   Meanwhile the clock is ticking as everyone on Earth gets closer and closer to their painful end. And if you’re wondering where Superman is, and why he isn’t helping. It’s because, for some unknown reason, he’s unconscious. You see his feet as he’s laid out on a slab at the D.E.O….

Supergirl, and the injured Martian Manhunter, are the only hope now. They fly off to the wreck of Fort Rozz, where Non and indigo are hiding, with their super soldiers. Fortunately for our heroes though, the rest of the super soldiers are already in cryogenic sleep, awaiting their long space voyage. So Supergirl and Martian Manhunter only have to fight Non and Indigo. What a convenient plot device. Non and Supergirl battle it out, while Manhunter and Indigo go at it. Supergirl and the Martian Manhunter win, as expected. But they still can’t stop Myriad, which is aboard Fort Rozz. So Supergirl flies Fort Rozz out into space. But the effort incapacitates her and she’s left floating in space, where she’ll probably die. NOT!

Luckily for her though, her big sister Alex can do anything. Without a space suit, she flies into space to get her, piloting the long dormant pod that initially brought Supergirl to Earth. Though how Alex opens it up to bring the unconscious Supergirl aboard is never explained. Maybe she just nudged her back to Earth. It would have made more sense for Superman to save her, even if it had to be done in long shots. But the show doesn’t want Superman helping Supergirl for some reason. Maybe they feel it would spoil the show’s girl-power premise. In fact, they go out of their way to make him seem totally ineffectual. But why build Supergirl up by tearing her cousin down? Is that really the only way to prove her worth?

The show ends with everything back to normal. Hank is restored as the head of the D.E.O., even though he is an alien himself. The President cut him some slack because he helped save the planet. Cat gives Kara a promotion, and her own windowless office. Maxwell Lord is back in everyone’s good graces. But does he have a thing for Alex, or Cat? And James finally kisses Kara, so that’s happening. And they all lived happily ever….wait a minute! Another Kryptonian pod crash-lands near National City. Who or what’s inside? The show ends without telling us. Is it another Kryptonian? And if so, are they friend or foe? STAY TUNED!!!   (Unless CBS pulls the plug on the series, leaving the mystery forever unsolved.)

SIDE NOTE: Who/what could be in the Kryptonian pod? Lets consult comic history; It could be Krypto, superman’s super dog, or Streaky, Supergirl’s super cat. It could even be Beppo, the super chimp, if they want to add comic relief to the show. But my guess is that it’s either Power Girl, a version of Supergirl from Earth 2, or Mon-el, a handsome super dude from a Krypton-like planet. If it’s Mon-el, that could spark a love triangle between Supergirl, James and this new Superboy. And if it’s Power Girl, she could intimidate Kara…. Hopefully, the show gets a second season and we get to see if I’m right… And what about Lucy Lane? Dump her, or find something meaningful for her to do. With Hank and Alex back at the D.E.O. she’s useless again!
