Is it any good? I think so. But it does take some getting used to. It’s beautiful, and an epic fantasy. But it’s got an all-puppet cast. Yeah, you heard me right. Voiced by bigwigs like; Mark Hamill, Sigourney Weaver, Alicia Vikander, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina, Taron Egerton and Andy Samberg.
It’s a prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 film, The Dark Crystal. But nostalgia has nothing to do with how much I like this Netflix series so far. Because I wasn’t a huge fan of the original film.
In the original film, the puppet actors were pretty stiff and couldn’t show a lot of emotion. And when they walked, with that awkward bobbing up and down thing puppets do. You knew it was because they had a hand up their hinneys, and didn’t have functional legs.
But that was then and this is now. And while the puppet faces in this new Netflix prequel series are still fairly unemotional, they’re a lot better now than they were back in 1982. And the puppets also move a lot better. So once you allow yourself to look past the doll-like faces, the epic story takes over and it’s a lot of fun. (I’m on the Fourth Episode of Ten)
Also, Kudos to The Jim Henson Company for creating such a beautiful fantasy realm. Netflix didn’t go cheap. It’s so elaborate, and imaginative, I’m sure it took a lot of time and talent to create, and bring to life. It’s a joy to watch. Even the gross vulture-like bad guys are masterfully detailed, which adds to their disgust.
So if you’re looking for something different to watch on Netflix, give this series a try. I’m sure it will become a family favorite. Available now!
