This new serious version of MULAN looks epic, but strips away the songs and sidekicks.  Mushu, the talking dragon, is gone, along with the lucky cricket and the expressive horse.  Which makes sense if you’re going more grounded.  But then they added a magic-wielding witch and a magic phoenix, so there’s that. Do they work better?  We’ll have to wait and see.

And about the hair: Mulan doesn’t cut her hair, which I always felt was very symbolic of her sacrifice and grit.  Instead she wears it up in a bun, which she can apparently just shake loose and instantly become a pretty woman again.   I don’t know how I feel about that. To me, it feels less committed and more have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too.  But see for yourself below.
