So what happened? Do we blame Lex Luthor, Low Ratings, a Newborn, or a combination thereof?  Nobody’s saying just yet. But the upcoming 20-episode sixth season will conclude the Supergirl saga.  As Coincidentally, Superman & Lois debuts.

As you may, or may not know, Supergirl star Melissa Benoist was pregnant, and by now has a newborn to factor into the equation.  But no real reason was given for the show’s demise.

Here’s what Benoist posted on Instagram…

“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.

She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.

I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”

And there you have it.  But as Supergirl’s alter ego is a journalist, like cousin Clark,  I’m surprised she didn’t answer the most important question. Why? Fans of the show want to know… but alas, we’ll have to wait for that news to leak a bit later.

How will it end?  My guess is that she’ll leave the planet to go live on Argo (Her Kryptonian hometown that’s thriving on an asteroid).  Her Mother is there, played by Smallville’s Lois Lane, Erica Durance.

OR, Supergirl will go to the 30th Century  to join the Legion of Superheroes.  Maybe her freshly divorced ex-boyfriend Mon-el will arrive from the 30th Century and sweep her off her feet. Mon-el was married to Saturn Girl in the future, though he still loved Supergirl. And since Saturn Girl can read minds, that relationship probably ended badly.

But  Supergirl has to leave present day Earth somehow, to explain why she doesn’t fly in to see Superman & Lois from time to time.  Clark and Lois are married and have two boys in their new CW series. So explaining why cousin Kara doesn’t stop in for the holidays, or to help in a ‘crisis’,  would be difficult.

What do you think? The series has 20 episodes yet to film. Will James Olsen come back, or maybe Winn? I’d like to see that, along with a Cat Grant return for a full-circle conclusion. But that’s just me.  How do you think the series will wrap up?
