WARNER BROTHERS: The Witches, a Roald Dahl novel, was 1st made into a movie in 1990, that starred Angelica Houston.  It was about how a little boy and his kindly grandmother thwart the efforts of a coven of witches to rid Britain of children by turning them into mice.

But this new 2020 version of The Witches stars Ann Hathaway and Octavia Spenser.  And the story seems to be the same, but takes place in 1960’s Alabama this time around. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, and written by Zemeckis, Kenya Barris, and Guillermo del Toro, it’ll be interesting to see what changed.  Obviously the special effects will be more elaborate.  But with 3 writers credited, I hope the script is great.

LAST WORD:   I liked the original 1990 film, but didn’t love it. It felt like a goofy TV Movie.  So I hope they ratchet-up the scares, the comedy, and add some more layers to the story itself.  Because if it’s just a  rehash, with better FX, what’s the point?
