AFTER BATGIRL’S DEMISE – DC FANS WORRY ABOUT WHAT’S NEXT
WB-DISCOVERY: The big news of the day is that the new $70+ Million BATGIRL feature has been CANCELLED, even though that film has already been shot. Leaving DC Fans to worry about what other properties might be on the chopping block.
Now, the film that has the most in common with Batgirl is BLUE BEETLE. It also started out as an HBO-MAX original film, then it was elevated to feature status. And like Batgirl, Blue Beetle is a lesser-known comic book hero, with a limited fan-base. Also, the film just recently wrapped, like Batgirl, and had no presence at San Diego Comic-con. But as far as I know, there have been no test screening, or reactions, good or bad. And I think that’s key. Because if the film is good/well-received, it makes no sense for Warner Bros-Discovery to shelve it. That would be an incredible waste of a lot of money. And big companies don’t like that. Reactions to Batgirl after reported test screenings were supposedly horrible..
In 2019 Warner Bros announced that an expensive new GREEN LANTERN CORPS series would debut on HBO-MAX. And then we heard a whole lot of nothing until April of 2021, when Finn Wittrock was cast to star as Guy Gardner, a promising start. But now it’s August 2022 and we still haven’t heard any other casting or solid production news. And there was no mention of it at San Diego Comic-Con. So I think it’s safe to say that Green Lantern fans should be worried about this project moving forward…
And what about the $200+ Million FLASH feature film? Surely that film is safe you say. Because the Flash film wrapped production months ago, and the execs who claimed they saw a cut of it, liked it. But then why was its release date pushed back from July 1st of this year to summer 2023. Did Ezra Miller’s bad behavior have anything to do with that? I think it did. Also, now that Discovery bought Warner Bros, does that film still reflect where Warner Bros-Discovery wants to go with the DC Universe? That is also an unknown, since the Flash film is supposed to re-set things multi-verse style. It might not fit into what new head-honcho David Zaslav has in mind. So only time will tell.
Aquaman 2, which also skipped San Diego Comic-con, is safe. As it’s the follow-up to a billion dollar success. And they just shot some new footage with Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne. Which supposedly was filmed to replace a Michael Keaton cameo. So does that now mean that Keaton (70) is out as Batman? Well, he played Batman in the new Batgirl film, which is dead. And he may have been replaced in Aquaman 2, if those rumors are true. So if The Flash does get cancelled, then Keaton will be totally out as Batman. Again, everything is up to Zaslav…
But regarding the Black Canary movie, which is supposed to be a spinoff from the Birds of Prey movie, which bombed. And is said to star Jurnee Smollett as the titular character in an original HBO Max movie. Its chances are a long shot at best…
