The Limey 4K UHD Review: Tell Them He’s 4K Coming
The Limey is back and you can tell them he’s f***ing coming. Lionsgate’s new 4K UHD offers a great way to experience Steven Soderbergh’s gangster film all over again, or for the first time.
In the late ‘90s, Soderbergh was experimenting with colored lighting and different film stock, and The Limey was no exception. You can really see the nuances of the film used for flashbacks and present day scenes.
Those shots of Terrence Stamp walking alone through industrial Los Angeles are so evocative. Going from florescent overhead light to bright sunlight is even more stark in 4K. You’ll notice the blue hue with the cops, yellow, green, just like Soderbergh’s bigger movies like Traffic.
Elaine (Lesley Ann Warren)’s place adds color to The Limey with its greenery. You can see all the L.A. smog in the skyline at Valentine (Peter Fonda)’s house, and when Wilson (Stamp) arrives at LAX.
Sound-wise, you’ll hear some background helicopter and traffic ambience in the rear speakers. Car crashes echo throughout the room. The Limey 4K also preserves the two commentary tracks from the original DVD.
