Return of Return of the Living Dead on 4K UHD
Scream Factory put Return of the Living Dead out on Blu-ray in 2016 loaded with bonus features. Now, that stellar edition gets a 4K UHD upgrade, with all the bonus features still included.
The daylight exteriors in Return of the Living Dead are a glorious portal back to 1985. Interiors are beautifully grainy like the films of that era. That made low budget horror hold up against big budget studio movies
Trash (Linnea Quigley)’s bright red hair is the standout color against the rest of the rainy mud and decomposing flesh. I never noticed how sweaty this movie is until the 4K. Everyone’s body glistens as they fend off the living dead.
Of course, the showcase is all the practical zombie work. They designed these to look real on set so bumped up to 4k detail shows all the craftsmanship, especially half woman they interrogate and the tar man.
There’s no surround sound, even with DTS. Return of the Living Dead was mixed in mono so mono it is. That was also a legitimate sound format in 1985 so it’s quaint.
