Training Day 4K UHD Review: Boom! You Never Know How Great It Can Look
22 years later, Denzel Washington still sells this movie from his very first scene. Ethan Hawke holds his own too. Now you can go on the Training Day ridealong in 4K detail.
From the magic hour sunrise to gritty blue interiors, Training Day captures the aesthetic of the streets. The bulk of the film is set in downtown Los Angeles. I don’t go downtown much but I can vouch for this 4K that it really looks like that in person. The streets are a little slicker thanks to director Antoine Fuqua, but it’s real.
Alonzo (Washington)’s car shines as it penetrates the various hoods, with drops of rain glistening from the night before. When Jake (Hawke) chases criminals into dirty back alleys, the grime shows. When Alonzo pulls down the shades in Roger (Scott Glenn)’s house, 4K really captures the dark shadows. The finale at night holds up in the shadows cast by hte green tinted apartment lights.
The sound mix probably carries over from previous Blu-ray editions but the score rumbles in the rear and the soundtrack pulses. Washington echoes in the rear when Jake does PCP. Cars zoom from rear to front and the Metro rumbles by. Gunshots echo and ricochet (which is also a great Denzel Washington movie that needs to come to 4K). Some neighbors yelling at Jake from the shadows at the end bounce back and forth across the room.
The bonus features since the first DVD release are still included on the Blu-ray disc too.
