The Whale Blu-ray Review: Brendan Fraser in All His Glory
The Whale hit Blu-ray just two days after Brendan Fraser took home the Oscar for his performance in it. Blu-ray is the highest format this minimalist film is presented in, but it is appropriate for this specific movie.
The only location is that apartment. HD captures the dim lighting in there and the sharp edges of the 4:3 frame. HD presents Fraser’s fat suit in stark glory for better or worse. However you feel about the stuff, every wrinkle and hair is perceptible in HD detail.
The Whale also includes a 24 minute behind the scenes feature. It covers some of the same stories of casting the film and adapting the play that we’ve been hearing all year, but it also equally goes into depth about each of the film’s four main characters. Additionally, there are good details about designing the space, such as putting the couch in the center of the room.
A seven minute featurette on the score also shows some instruments that were built exclusively for the film.
