The HD I Want To See: MEGAMAN LEGENDS

I’d like to introduce to you a segment that I hope to see grow in strength and numbers as time goes on.  This is a segment conceived by Roberto Reynoso and then bounced around between the two of us.  For now, it seems appropriate to title it “The HD I Want to See” because that about sums up what the article is about, plus it’s all catchy and rhymey.  Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey.

First off, why HD remake at all?  Well, I think the most concise answer is that there is an audience for it.  As gamers, we look back fondly on the games we played in our youth and sometimes we want to go back and play those games again.  We long for the good old days but are then met by restrictions of plugging in older consoles after considerably dusting them off.  Or worse, we’re so used to the newer generation that we can’t stand to deal with the old generation for long because we have become spoiled with new graphics and controls.

An HD remake allows us to re-explore our old love from the comfort of our new love.  Our Sega Genesis game can be fully functional on an Xbox One and we lose no sleep over it unless we feel particularly nitpicky.  Like the fog in Silent Hill 2.  Seriously guys, the fog made it..

SilentHill2

Now is the part of the article where I’m going to have to ask you to put your nostalgia glasses on for a bit, or at least to try and look through mine as I explain why Megaman Legends deserves an HD remake.  I would be inclined to drop a spoiler message here but the game is from 1997 so if you haven’t played it by now I’m pretty sure I won’t be ruining your day with this article.

Megaman has had a long and celebrated history here in the states.  Sequel after sequel and robot masters galore, followed by the impressive and dark storylines of Megaman X.  I personally cite X4 as one of my favorite playstation games due to the exploration of Zero as a character and the complexity of the Mavericks and Sigma’s boss forms.

MegaManLegendsPC

When I first got Megaman Legends, I bought it on name alone.  Everything about it just looked great.  It was a large world to explore with refreshing character designs for Megaman and Roll.  Nothing about the box art prepared me for just how much fun I was going to have.

See, Megaman Legends did something new for the franchise.  It was an RPG first off and it had some elements of an open world sandbox too.  The graphics at the time, for Playstation 1, were beautifully done and the enemy AI was programmed well enough to give you some decent trouble along your way through dungeons.  Again though, this was an RPG and that is what made Megaman Legends so unique and fun to play.

You had a weapon crafting system that was probably the most rewarding of all.  You would find one or two pieces and bring them to Roll and voila, a new gun or other helpful item.  You could upgrade your weapons using Zenny collected from the various Reaverbots that you fought and destroyed.  I remember making using of the Vacuum Arm and a high powered Buster to farm Zenny in a specific dungeon and that was probably my first introduction to my future in playing MMOs.

You had a lot of interactions to experience too.  There was an artist who also curated at a museum and was always so excited to get donations of items you found dungeon crawling.  There was the Mayor who needed donations to rebuild the town after certain destructive attacks (Monteriggioni?  Anyone?) There was the police force who were just incompetent enough to need your help when the Bonne family was wreaking havoc.  And the Bonne family!  The romantic tension between Tron and Megaman, coupled with the fact that Tron had an obligation to her family but was simultaneously confused by these strange feelings for the Blue Boy, I loved it so much.  Add in the childhood friend romantic subplot between Megaman and Roll and you had just enough of a love story to capitalize on those feelings without having to distract from the main story of the game.

So how do we remake it into HD?  Well, for starters, a graphical update.  Part of Megaman Legends’ appeal was the cute character design that didn’t stray too far from realism.  Translating this into 3D would be very easy nowadays and could be achieved with great success.  I’m thinking of some Guilty Gear Xrd type of artwork personally but I know there are plenty of ways to do it.

I’d like to see Kattelox island actually made much larger, with more ruins and more places to explore.  I don’t so much mind the idea of creating new characters that weren’t there before because the chance for larger story is now available.  I would fully embrace using “Skyrim Clone” as a model for building this game up into something epic.  That museum curator could now have a rival museum that she’s competing with and there could be different rewards from both museums making your decisions of who to donate to that much more important to consider.

The weapons and upgrading system could be expanded now that the island is bigger.  Add in all new weapons that hadn’t existed before.  New upgrades or more effective ones at least.  A full on driving mechanic could be introduced for the armored vehicle you obtain early in game.  Rather than just using it as a fast travel system you could now travel in real time and explore the island.

reaverbot428

The Reaverbots could see considerable improvements with this remake.  Much of their design, and there were many different designs, had a campy sort of children’s feel to it, like a big dumb Frankenstein who is just scary enough to feel threatening.  Some had more of a menacing tone, like the giant wolf Reaverbots or the Scyther looking ones, and there’s a definite unnerving aspect to the cold, unfeeling robot eye that all Reaverbots have.

Story wise, I think it would be good to see an expansion of not only the town’s history but of the world’s.  We’re left wondering how this world became covered in water (further investigation online leads to you the information that Legends’ timeline is many centuries after the X and Zero timelines.) and how the Reaverbots and ruins came into creation.  The revelation of Megaman Juno at the end of the game does help to explain some of this but I think that in game narrative could be done better.  Research notes found in ruins, ancient texts deciphered from the walls, old data logs that are recovered and made sense of.  Megaman Juno’s part in the game seemed only to be not only one of the hardest bosses to fight but also to shoe-horn in the rest of the story.  Why not play around with teasing the history of the world to the player?

Mega-Man-Legends-3

Overall I think that bringing Megaman Legends into the current gen of gaming consoles would be a fun endeavour if not a lucrative one.  While Megaman Legends did have a sequel, it was sadly left at a huge cliffhanger for the proposed Megaman Legends 3 that would have answered so many questions.  I think that the events of Megaman Legends 2 and the subsequent planned ideas for 3 would make for amazing DLC purchases that would be worth every penny you paid and create a massive world to enjoy for hours on end.

Did you have a favorite part of Megaman Legends?  Is there something I missed that would be a great selling point for a remake?  Let me know in the comments.

Lady Sif to appear on Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D.

(null)

Jaimie Alexander will return to Marvel’s AGENTS of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Lady Sif from Asguard, best known as the home of Thor.

Lady Sif will appear in the series second episode of its return. This is great news for some, however there’s one catch. Lady Sif has a bit of amnesia. Not remembering Thor or why she has been returned to earth, many questions will be have to be answered in this episode.

“The amnesia of Lafy Sif will provide comic relief to the series that has been filled with betrayal and death” Executive Producer Jeffrey Bell tells TV Insider.

The last appearance of Lady Sif on the show was in Season 1, episode 15, titled “Yes Men.

Coulson’s team is also rumored to have to engage in a battle with a super charged for before they can reunite with the Asguardian. ABC is keeping quiet on just who that might be. Anyone want to take a guess?

DC’s NEW 52 Getting A “New” Reboot?

Flashpoint-Comic-cover

If you know anything about DC’s New 52, you’ll note that this is a veritable “reboot” of DC characters as a result of the Flash storyline “Flashpoint”. It was a very convenient way to “modernize” the decades-old characters and hopefully bring in a newer, fresher crowd. It also allowed DC to bring in its Wildstorm and Vertigo titles.

Wildstorm_logoVertigo_dc_comics_logo

But, the New 52 will soon come to an end. DC announced in a press release on Friday that they are going in a “bold new direction” and will be “accessible to a wider group of readers.” The funny thing is that the DC universe won’t go back to what it was before the Flashpoint, it will be some new…amalgam.

Convergence_promotional_image

Starting June 3rd, the company will end its storyline “Convergence” with the introduction of 24 brand new series while 25 titles of the New-but-soon-to-be-old 52 will continue their stories unscathed. From the ashes, 49 titles will emerge from Convergence, with new titles debuting throughout the year. Established characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman will probably not be touched much, but some changes will happen…

Netflix Reportedly Making LEGEND OF ZELDA TV Series

There are many fans of Zelda, young and old who are going to really like this news I’m about to share.  Netflix has decided to make a live action tv series based off of Nintendo’s hit selling game Zelda.  Being referred to as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience. This is a huge step for Nintendo based on its past history with Hollywood.

Of course it is entirely possible that this project goes absolutely no where.  It has not been officially announce which means that Nintendo and Netflix don’t want to talk about it either.  A Netflix spokesperson said the company does comment on rumors or speculation.  While Nintendo was not available for comment.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the best-known, most successful game franchises of all time.  It came out in the US in 1987 and has enjoyed 29 releases that spanned 20 years.  If you will recall, actor Robin Williams even named his daughter Zelda after the games’s princess.

Nintendo does games the way games should be done.  They are at times flawless, addicting, and down right gorgeous.  Yet it seems when they out step their bounds is when things seem to go awry.  In 1993 the live-action Super Mario Bros. film bombed at the box office and widely looked down up by critics.

A Zelda series gives Netflix another opportunity to build its reputation for original television programming.  And with Orange is the New Black, and House of Lies, I think they are doing a pretty good job.  I’m all for a TV version of Zelda, as long as they stay true to the core of Zelda.  Keep Link as Nintendo would have him, and even maybe bring in Navi! I mean, she wold be important right?

Only time will tell if this will come true.  a Zelda show would be great, especially if Nintendo can base game was released with it.  Either as a tie in or a complete stand alone.  The world needs a Zelda take over.  Thank you Netflix for this chance.

SUPERMAN’S New Power…What Is It?

Longtime fans of Superman (or even DC) will note that superhero powers aren’t set in stone. Things can change at any time. With big events like Crisis on Infinite Earths and Darkest Night, the writers get full reign on what happens to our favorite comic book icons.

That’s a really small invisible jet there!

But with the New 52, writers have gone ballistic on changes, the latest of which applies to our resident Krypton alien, Superman.

SupermanCover

Superman’s latest issue shows a fight with another sole survivor of their planet enemy. During the match, a funny thing occurs, Superman explodes.

No really, he explodes.

Apparently, it’s an evolution of his heat vision, Batman explains all:

To me, this seems like something you can use in a video game. Either that, or the guys at DC are trying to create Goku’s version of the Spirit Bomb.

Not surprisingly called the Super Flare.

Ryan Reynolds Sounds Off About DEADPOOL Rating

Quite frankly, a Deadpool movie that wasn’t rated R, just wouldn’t, absolutely couldn’t be the awesome Deadpool we all know and love (and I use that term lightly).  For those of us who read the comics, we have to agree with Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern), the Deadpool movie should be rated R.

The Deadpool movie is set to begin filming next month and will be director Tim Miller’s debut film.  Reynolds tells Collider “He’s (Tim) has always been the right guy.  He’s always shown nothing but a fierce loyalty to the canon of Deadpool, and that’s the thing you look for first and foremost, a guy that is always wanting to push a little bit farther.”

Deadpool will be filmed with a smaller budget than other superhero movies and Reynolds feels thats great, as it will allow for things to happen that don’t usually happen in the big budget superhero movies.  Deadpool has quite the mouth in the comics.  Does Reynolds know if Deadpool will be R rated? “I have no idea” guess we will just have to wait and see.

Here is the interview Ryan Reynolds did on Collider.

Could The JOKER already be in GOTHAM?

We fans of Batman know, that the Joker at one point was in Arkham Asylum.  Which just happens to be in the outskirts of Gotham.  When Gotham returned with the episode ‘Rogue’s Gallery‘ early last month, could the mass escape from Arkham Asylum be the clue we all missed that a Joker storyline might be on the way for Season 2 of Gotham?

Here is the scene in question.  Two things to note, one the blood on the nurses face looks strikingly like the Clown Prince’s “smile”.  Secondly, the signature laugh that is rumored to be that of the Joker.

What do you think?

The producer of the show Bruno Heller tells TVGuide the timetable for the introduction has been moved up within the first season. Heller says “We’ve said you’re going to be waiting a bit long for it, but this is America, -nobody likes to wait. So, we will scratch the surface of that storyline, yes.  But just scratch it, – a little tap on the door.”

Everyone keep your ears open for the little rapping at the door, this is something none of us want to miss.

JOYSTIQ Shutting Down! Details Inside.

For me, I love to peruse through my favorite game news websites for any tidbit of information that I can find. They don’t even need to be real news; some of the random things that I see posted are just hilarious.

One of the sites I visited was joystiq.com. Unfortunately, the digital gods of AOL have decided to put the kibosh on its successful website. This means about 13 staffers are set to look for new jobs, according to Game Politics.

BLACK MIRROR To Get US Adaptation!

Black Mirror is one of those shows that can be completely real. This Twilight Zone-esque program takes away some of the horror of the “other side” and gives it a more post-modern, light hearted, cock-your-head-and-squint-your-eyes feel. It’s weird. But the reality of this is that…they seem completely plausible.

Black-MirrorEps1

What would you do?

Take the first episode, “The National Anthem”. It’s the story of the Prime Minister of Britain dealing with the demands of a kidnapper that took the Queen’s daughter; in order for the Duchess to be released, he has to “make love to a pig” on live television. The intriguing part is that the whole episode takes place within a day; showing how fast social media can spread and deliver news. It’s not…scary per se, but it does make us question the potentials of social media.

BlackMirrorEps2

Still, with this show receiving a lot of views due to its recent showing on Netflix, there has been enough buzz to warrant a possible US adaptation. According to Variety, Endemol, the recently merged company behind The Biggest Loser, American Idol, Big Brother, and Black Mirror has declared they “have a plan” for an adaptation of the series in the US. Not surprisingly, American Idol and Big Brother are also adaptations of British-original shows.

Black Mirror even satirizes its own shows.

Black Mirror even satirizes its own shows.

Me? I’m excited. The series is short, so it’s a quick watch. And you should watch it. It’s simple in its execution and complex in its layers. It speaks to us as a society and satirizes it while holding a mirror up to our own psyche.

More soon.
