My Thoughts

I give Queen & Slim a B.

To be honest with you, Queen & Slim is definitely not my type of film.  But, I was pleasantly surprised by it.  It’s a Bonnie and Clyde type story except for a law-abiding man and female happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  It is a simple love story of two people who are complete opposites but due to the circumstances got to know each other.  Though Slim and Queen were on the run for killing a cop they became heroes within their community.

The script was well written as I was drawn into the story.  The actors portrayed their characters (Queen & Slim) beautifully as you were engaged by who they were.  I was rooting for them as well because they were good people destroyed by a bad situation.  At the end of the film, I definitely felt the loss as many did in the film.  I also felt Queen and Slim also learned something about themselves along the way.  They became better people and enjoyed life with the short time they had together.

My Thoughts

I give Stuber a B+.

Stuber follows Vic (Dave Bautista) an LAPD Detective who has been trying to arrest and capture Oka Tedjo (Iko Uwais) who cold bloodily murdered his partner. After getting Lasik surgery and not able to see clearly, Vic calls an Uber Driver, Stu (Kumail Nanjiani).   An adventure persues as well as an unlikely friendship.

I actually really enjoyed this film.  I wasn’t expecting much as I didn’t know much about this film.

I was super impressed with Dave Bautista.  I haven’t really seen him in many films and prior to this, the only thing I really saw him in was WWE.   He did a great job of his portrayal of Vic who was so obsessed with capturing Tedjo and avenging his partner’s death that he put even his family and daughter on the sidelines.  My favorite scene with Vic was when he had just gotten his lasik surgery and he received a lead for Tedjo.  He attempts to drive and he can’t see.  He drives his car over everything.  I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.

I really like Iko Uwais (Tedjo) in the villain role.  He didn’t have many lines in the film but his facial expression and actions gave off a person who didn’t care who he took down to get to the top.  He had a few scenes showing off his martial arts skills.  I just wish he could spar a bit longer with Vic (Bautista) or maybe even Stu (Kumail Nanjiani).

I liked how Stu was the voice of reason.  He was kind of the shoulder to cry on.  The person that gave advice. I liked the unlikely friendship that grew between him and Vic.  He even risked his life to save Vic as well as his daughter.

My Thoughts

I give the Rocketman Blu-ray a B+.

Rocketman is a film that tells the story of Elton John.  It is more of a musical than a biopic. Or maybe a little bit of both.  This film does feature some of the more known songs by Elton John.

I enjoyed this film.  I loved the music.  Elton John was born with talent from a young child.  He could pick up anything from ear.  He is definitely a musical genius.  The only vice I have about this film is that it is more of a musical than a biopic.  I felt that this format took away from the storyline but I was still able to see the trials and tribulations that Elton went through and the musical numbers they did use went with what was going on in the scene. I also loved Taron Egerton performance as Elton John.  He looked the part and brought the over the top style of Elton John to life in this film.  Even the actor who played a young, Elton resembled the real one.

My Thoughts

I give the Pet Sematary Blu-ray a B.

I was a little leery about this film as a remake (well, more of a reimagining) because usually these films end up as a disaster.  Especially with a film that is considered a popular horror classic.  But I watched it with an open mind and enjoyed it.  It wasn’t the greatest horror film I have ever seen but I did have fun.  Just keep in mind, in Pet Sematary 2019 they switched things around from its 1989 Counterpart. Hence making this film more of a reimaging of the film rather than a remake.

There are a few things I really liked about this film.  Anyone who knows me, knows I’m like a crazy cat lady.  I absolutely love seeing the cat or cats (I believe there were four: Leo, JD, Jaeger, & Tonic) who played Church on screen.  It’s amazing what animals are capable of doing.  Sadly about a month ago, one the cats (Leo) passed away from a condition that is prone to the breed.

Jeté Laurence who plays Elle did a wonderful job in the film.  Whenever a child actor is involved, I am always impressed with their performances.  She has an amazing gift and I hope to see her in more films in the future.  It had to be super fun playing a girl that comes back from the dead!

I always have fun watching horror films whether they are good or bad. Though the storyline for this film was ok.  There were elements I did enjoy within this film and I had fun watching it.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch Criterion Collection Blu-Ray Review

I saw Hedwig and the Angry Inch when it first came out, and remembered songs like “Wig In A Box” and “Angry Inch.” Over the years it became a Broadway phenomenon, and I wish I’d seen NPH or Darren Criss perform it. Criterion putting out a new Blu-ray was a great excuse to revisit it, and of course now I have all the songs stuck in my head all over again.

“Wig In A Box” is still the signature song for me. I’m sure the chord progression is what keeps me coming back to it, but I also relate to it. It’s where Hedwig dreams of the woman he could be, and the bittersweet feeling of waking up as himself again. We’ve all woken up from dreams that we wished were real. Many of us are lucky enough to be living our true selves, but imagine if you could only be your true self in your subconscious. It’s heartbreaking what John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s song tapped into.

“Angry Inch” is such filled with such rage, you can’t deny it’s power. It’s an anthem to everyone who’s been forced to deal with circumstances beyond their control, but I’d hate to compare any of my problems to Hedwig’s. Hansel underwent a sex change operation to escape East Berlin, it was botched, he was abandoned, then the Wall came down anyway. It’s drama’s job to present the extreme version of our daily struggles, so Hansel’s journey to become Hedwig is universal in the way that everybody figures out who they want to be, and anyone who doesn’t accept you be damned. Still, I’m a cis white male. I’ve never had to be as brave as Hedwig, but I admire her.

“Midnight Radio” is an empowering rock ballad, an ode to other trailblazing artists too. “Wicked Little Town” walks the line of sadness feeling out of place, but accepting you’re still you there. “Tear Me Down” is such a classic rock song I could have sworn it was a cover, although I have heard Meat Loaf cover it since. “Origin of Love” builds to that crescendo with poetic lyrics.

I focus on the music, because if it’s a musical I want the music to be good, just like if it’s a comedy I want to laugh and if it’s an action movie I want to see cool stuff. The plot is also timeless in its tale of showbiz betrayal and people just letting you down. Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt) not only uses Hedwig’s material to become a star, but all he needs to do to be a good person is stay and talk about her complicated situation. Whether or not Tommy can ultimately accept her, he didn’t even try.

The colors on this transfer from 4K are bright, with saturated grainy film dancing to the beat. The costumes, the wigs, the dive bars (and salad bar), the glitter, those closeups of the eyes in striking detail all bring out the flash and aching heart of Hedwig. New bonus features go deep with nearly 20 years’ worth of retrospective.

The Hedwig reunion runs 56 minutes at the Jane Street Theater, with some footage of the early performances, the 2007 concert and even a Korean performance. They also discuss the LGBTQ climate circa Clinton and Giuliani leading to the reconstruction of binary constraints. Their name dropping of celebrity fans is fun. Now we know who was cool enough to get Hedwig before it was even a movie. John Cameron Mitchell had interest from A list directors but held strong to direct himself. Production designer, the late Therese DePrez is well represented in the discussion, and in behind the scenes photos.

David Fricke interviews Stephen Trask for 29 minutes. They talk in very deep music theory terms which is interesting to hear applied to Hedwig songs, along with some more history of the show and footage of early performances.

My favorite new bonus features though are Mitchell, costume designer Arianne Phillips and hair and makeup artist Mike Potter showing off their collections. These end up being the most personal as each artifact represents a story and/or milestone either the show achieved, or they achieved in their careers or personal lives.

All the previous DVD extras are included too. I always remember the 90 minute documentary because it begins with the press junket, which I didn’t cover because I wasn’t yet smart enough to know how cool Hedwig was going to be. But I know a lot of the reporters in it so it was fun to see them again too. It is also reassuring how much better discussion of LGBTQ themes has gotten since the unnuanced press junket of 2001.

The Batman Films In 4K on Blu-ray

I have not upgraded to 4K yet, but the Blu-rays from these new Batman 4K masters are so good I can only imagine the full presentation. It just goes to show you that if they do a 4K restoration, even the Blu-ray is going to look noticeably better.

In Batman you can see every gritty detail in the opening bat symbol no matter how dark it is. The matte paintings of Gotham City are extraordinary, as is the production design on the ground. Even regular dialogue scenes look like Jack Nicholson is in your living room.

You can totally see the wire when Batman swings down at Jack Napier. You probably could on the big screen too, but you couldn’t rewind and double check. I like those revealing goofs. They let you see behind the scenes a bit. One shot of Batman approaching the Joker in the Batwing flares up with digital noise. I wonder if the 4K UHD corrects that.

Batman Returns is a winter wonderland. The snow is a crisp white, especially at night when much of the film takes place. The Christmas lights really add some pops of color to the black and white gothic city. The new transfer also pulls out lots of texture and detail in Penguin’s underground layers, Selina’s crappy apartment stucco and the snow cover of Gotham City. The pink light of Selina’s home is pervasive and her Catwoman suit is extra shiny. You’ve got Batman fighting Catwoman at night both dressed in black and their shapes are sharp and distinct.

The Schumacher films change up the aesthetic. They’re a lot more fluorescent. They do balance the dark Burton look more than I remember though and these transfers can manage both in the same frame, especially with Two Face in Batman Forever. There is more beige though, like Chase Meridian’s office, and even Wayne Manor on the ground floor. The Grayson circus looks awesome with all the colors.

Batman and Robin is more confident in its aesthetic. It’s got more color in all the design including Robin’s red and Mr. Freeze’s Icy blue. The extravagant sets are magnificently gaudy with icicle, overgrown vegetation or Bruce Wayne’s rainforest party  in crisp detail and color. Much more liberal use of Gotham City miniatures look great too.

So I recommend the new 4K editions of the Batman films even as Blu-rays, and it makes me excited to see all of my favorite films again in new ways with 4K.

My Thoughts

I give the Bumblebee Blu-ray a B+.

Bumblebee is an action-packed and heartwarming film all in one.  This film follows the relationship between Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) and Bumblebee (Yellow VW or Camero in the Michael Bay Films).  Bumblebee has no idea who he is but begins to remember little by little throughout the film. With Agent Burns (John Cena) trying to destroy him as well as The Decepticons, will Bumblebee be able to destroy them and save the world?

There are many things I liked about this film.  I loved the relationship between Charlie and Bumblebee.  He came into her life when she needed him the most.  He help her in many ways to cope with the passing of her Dad.  It’s beautiful how the relationship unfolds on screen.  John Cena did an incredible job portraying Agent Burns, the man who wanted to destroy Bumblebee. At first, Burns thought he was a monster but in the end, he saw that Bumblebee was on the same side as him.  The CGI was beautifully done in this film.  Bumblebee and The Decepticons looked like they really could exist in our world.   I can not forget to mention its super awesome to see Bumblebee and the Decepticons transform on screen.  How they go from vehicle to standing robot is amazing.

My Thoughts

I give the Overlord Blu-ray a B+.

I really enjoyed this film.  It had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.   I loved how it was a zombie film but it was a unique one with a twist. It was something straight out of the Wolfenstein video game.

There are many things I liked about this film.  As stated above, I loved how it was a zombie film that was unique with an added twist.  It reminded me of Wolfenstein 3D, a video game I use to play as a kid. For the first half of the film, you’re wondering why the Nazi’s are doing experiments and for what.  It does make sense once the reason is revealed.  These aren’t the zombies from The Walking Dead.  These are ones I wouldn’t want to come face to face with.

I really liked the main character, Boyce (Jovan Adepo).  He was an underdog you could relate to that gained strength and confidence in himself throughout the film.  He may have not been a leader but once in the midst of war, he took the lead and did what he believed was right.

Another character I loved was Ford (Wyatt Russell).  He is a born leader.  I liked how he carried himself and did what he needed to do to survive.  He was fearless in some ways and a great soldier. I think the team would have not gotten as far as they did without him.

Another thing I really liked about this film is that it took place during WWII. One of the things I loved learning about in History was the World Wars and I have a fascination for WWII Planes. This film drew me in right away as it opens up to cargo plans carrying paratroopers to their jump point.

Overall, this film is a fun ride.  I enjoyed every minute of it!

Schindler’s List 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

Schindler’s List returned to theaters for its 25th anniversary, and now it comes to home video in a 4K Ultra HD 25th anniversary edition. Unfortunately I do not have a 4K TV to watch the grand restoration, but the regular Blu-ray included still looks as great as the film did in 1993.

The black and white is crisp and sharp in HD. What is most striking about the Blu-ray of Schindler’s List is the darkness. Whether it’s Oskar Schindler’s factories, his or the SS soldiers’ black suits or the depths of concentration camps, the blackness has distinct character. The detailed textures visible in HD only make the Holocaust feel more real and disturbing.

The Tribeca Film Festival 25th anniversary Q&A is included on the disc of bonus features. Steven Spielberg, Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Embeth Davidtz and Caroline Godall reflect on the film for 40 minutes. It seems like any time they talk about Schindler’s List it’s going to be profound. The perspective on filming in 1993 seems to come flooding back as if they just wrapped.

All the bonus features from the 20th anniversary Blu-ray are also included, so the 25th Anniversary Edition becomes the definitive Schindler’s List collection.
